Common Bodywork Modalities

The Process: After the client filled out the health data form, the therapist consults with the client and finds out which areas need emphasis during the session. The techniques used in delivering the necessary bodywork may include one or more of the following modalities and others not mentioned below, thus, the client benefits from a full range of skills from the therapist.

Swedish Massage is the best-known type of bodywork performed nowadays. It’s a set of techniques that include light gliding strokes as well as rhythmic tapping strokes that relieve tension in the top-most layers of muscles and increasing circulation and healing in the body. May include some light stretches.

Deep Tissue Massage works deeper layers of tissue with the aim of releasing stubborn knots in the muscles. The therapist may use forearms, elbows, and knuckles and apply pressure to areas that need more intense focus. This form of massage is used for therapeutic reasons rather than for relaxation.

Prenatal/Postnatal Massage is a type of bodywork that helps pregnant clients cope with the stress, tension, and pain related to pregnancy and childbearing. It involves positioning or bolstering the client in special ways to maximize comfort and safety while receiving bodywork as well as lessening pressure applied to specific areas contraindicated for deep tissue bodywork.

Sports Massage is a type of bodywork geared towards the athlete and the sport event for which they are training. Depending on the athlete’s goal for the session, the therapist may include deep tissue and trigger point techniques to release knots, active or passive stretching to increase range of motion, and deep abdominal breathing which are all essential for mobilizing the body’s natural healing capabilities. This is also very useful for the office worker who spends many hours in front of a computer screen and consequently develops a lot of head/neck/shoulder/back pain.

Traditional Thai Massage is performed on a two-inch foam mat on the floor. This form of bodywork includes acupressure applied to energy channels on the body as well as joint mobilization using yoga style stretches. The client wears comfortable attire such as gym clothes or Thai fisherman’s pants and t-shirt while receiving this bodywork. Some analgesic balms and warm towels may be used. Minimum duration: 75-min.

Manual Lymph Drainage is a special technique designed to relieve the body of pain and swelling due to an excess water buildup (edema) from an inherent health condition or side effects of surgery. May be included into a custom massage session.  MLD volume package discount available for purchase for post-op clients.
